Abstract

1367012 Sulphur containing compounds CHEVRON RESEARCH CO 7 Nov 1972 [15 Nov 1971] 51373/72 Heading C2C [Also in Division C5] The invention comprises compounds of the following formulµ wherein R 1 and R 2 represent alkyl groups containing at least 4 C atoms which sterically hinder the adjacent OH or SH group, R 3 , R 4 and R 5 represent C 1-20 alkyl, hydroxyalkyl, hydroxyalkoxyalkyl, hydroxyalkylpoly-(oxyalkyl), aralkyl or aryl, providing that when R 3 is alkyl it contains at least 2 C atoms when R 1 and R 2 are both t-butyl; R 6 is C 1 -C 8 alkylene; each R 7 represents H, alkyl or aryl; X represents O or S, and Y represents H or a metallic cation. They may be obtained by combining a 4-thiol- or 4- hydroxy-dithiobenzoic acid or a metal salt thereof with 0 to 1 equivalent of a proton donor to obtain a first reaction product, and thereafter combining said first reaction product with from one-half to two equivalents of a compound selected from haloalkanes, α-halo-#-hydroxyalkanes, α-halo-#-hydroxyalkoxyalkanes, α- halo- #-hydroxy-polyalkoxyalkanes, halo-aralkanes and haloaryl compounds to give the required compounds. Examples are given for the preparation of the compounds. They are useful as additives for lubricating compositions.
