Abstract

1366192 Magnetic recording tape MINNESOTA MINING & MFG CO 25 Feb 1972 [26 Feb 1971 23 Aug 1971] 8887/72 Heading B2E A magnetic recording tape has a non- magnetisable backing member carrying a duallayer magnetisable coating of up to 600 microinches in thickness, each layer being a homogeneous admixture comprising a major proportion of magnetisable particles and a minor proportion of nonmagnetisable binder, characterised in that the outer magnetisable layer has a thickness of 20-70 microinches and a surface roughness not exceeding about 10 microinches and the inner magnetisable layer has a thickness at least equal to that of the outer layer. In making such tapes the inner layer may comprise a binder and a crosslinking agent such that sufficient curing occurs to prevent any volatile solvent in which the outer layer is applied from affecting the physical properties of the inner layer. Preferably the inner layer contains γ-Fe 2 O 3 and the outer layer CoO modified γ-Fe 2 O 3 . In examples polyurethane elastomer and phenoxy resin in a volatile solvent are used as a medium in which to suspend γ-Fe 2 O 3 before application to a polyethylene terephthalate backing tape. The outer layer is similarly constituted, substituting CoO-Fe 2 O 3 for γ-Fe 2 O 3 alone.
