Abstract

1366045 Electromagnetic I C engine valve gear DR ING hcF PORSCHE A G 16 Aug 1972 [28 Sept 1971] 38244/72 Heading F1B [Also in Division G1] In an I.C. engine having inlet and exhaust valves arranged to be actuated by electromagnets which are controlled by a control pulse generator, driven in dependence upon engine speed, via a pulse distributor, the electromagnetic valves of a fuel injection installation are controlled in dependence upon the control pulses which control the inlet valves. As shown, the control pulse generator 3 is provided by a cam operated interrupter switch driven by the engine crank-shaft, although an inductive or a photo-electric pick-up may be used. The pulses are applied to an AND gate 9 and to a regulating switch 11 which provides a voltage inversely related to engine speed, a safety switch 13 being provided to enable AND gates 9 and 12 only when the engine speed exceeds a pre-set value. The distributor consists of a ring counter 10 which receives the control pulses and consists of a series of flip-flops 26-29, one for each engine cylinder. The electromagnets 20, 21, 25 of the inlet, exhaust and fuel injection valves respectively of one cylinder only are shown, each being controlled by a respective timing unit 15 consisting of two monostable switches. The switches 16, 18 determine the opening instant of the inlet and exhaust valves in dependence upon the pulse received from flip-flop 26 and the engine speed characterized by the voltage output of switch 11. The duration of opening of the inlet and exhaust valves is determined by the switches 17, 19. The switch 23 is connected to the output of the switch 16 to determine the opening instant of the fuel injection valve, the duration of injection being determined by a switch 24 which receives a voltage from a potentiometer 32 whose slides is controlled by the position of the induction choke valve 33 of the engine. The ring counter 10 and timing units 15 are preferably formed as an integrated circuit.
