Abstract

1365769 Heat-sealed packages MARDON FLEXIBLE PACKAGING Ltd 9 March 1973 [11 March 1972] 11465/72 Heading B8C A heat-sealed package, containing for example disposable surgical instruments such as syringes, &c., and which can be sterilized after heat sealing and retain the contents sterilized, and which can be opened so that the contents can be removed without contamination, comprises opposing sheets of materials which are heat-sealed together by a peelable seal along marginal portions at least one of the sheets comprising a neutrally-sized paper which is preferably glazed on its outer surface. The term neutrally-sized is defined as sized under neutral conditions with a pH value in the range of 7À2 to 8À3 inclusive and using an alkyl ketene dimer as the sizing agent. The glazed surface of the sheet of paper is formed by drying the paper on a heated, polished metal, cylinder, the unglazed surface of the paper remaining relatively rough, and the paper preferably having a Bendtsen porosity between the limits of 60-120 c.c./min. and a basic weight not less than 50 g/m<SP>2</SP>. and preferably not less than 55 g/m.<SP>2</SP> The other sheet need not be porous and can be either a film of thermoplastics material, a laminate of similar, or dissimilar, layers of plastics materials or, a polyethylenecoated paper. If, however, the latter is used for gas-sterilization purposes the coating on the paper should be of a discontinuous form or, of such a porosity as to achieve permeability. In one example of forming a package a sheet of neutrally-sized Kraft paper, machine glazed on one surface and with a heat-sealable lacquer adhesive, is peelably sealed along its marginal edges to a non-porous polyester/polyethylene film to form a package containing an article, the interior of the package being gas sterilized. The porous base material of the other sheet of the package may be a non-woven fabric, or paperlike, material. The external glazed surface of the package is suitable for good quality printing. Several other examples for forming a package according to the invention are described. The neutrally-sized paper base may comprise the closure of an open-topped, rigid, thermo-formed container.
