Abstract
1365761 Digital measuring instrument TEXAS INSTRUMENTS Inc 6 Jan 1972 [20 Jan 1971] 658/72 Heading G4H An electronic instrument for measuring the recurrence frequency of pulses, e.g. a tachometer or speedometer comprises a shift register (1) supplied at the clock input (4) with pulses to be measured, and at the signal input (6) with a setting signal, means supplying to the erase input (8) of the shift register a sequence of pulses whose recurrence frequency is, at the most, equal to the smallest recurrence frequency of the pulses to be measured and an indicating device (3) comprising a series of indicating elements which are connected to the respective outputs of each stage of the shift register and indicate the state of each stage. In the preferred embodiment, a storage register (2) is interposed between the shift register 1 and the indicating elements (3) which elements are preferably light emitting diodes or liquid crystals. The pulses to be measured shift the setting signal along register (1) filling successively more stages of the register. The output of oscillator 11 is divided at 12 and produces a sequence of pulses at a frequency at or below the lowest to be measured. When a pulse is produced it switches flip-flop 7c, setting gate 7b which passes pulses direct from oscillator 11. These are applied to three stage ring counter 7a which supplies in succession; [1] a pulse to the erase input (9) of storage register (2) thus clearing the register; [2] a pulse to the transfer input (10) of storage register (2) thus entering the information from the stages of storage register (1) and [3] a pulse to both erase input (8) of storage register (1) thus clearing the register and to the reset input of flip-flop 7c, thus disenabling gate 7b. The information in storage register (2) is displayed by indicating devices (3), the number lit (from the left) being proportional to the input pulse frequency. Alternatively, the signal input may be present only for the first shift pulse, the output reading then being indicated by only one lamp.
