Abstract

1365747 Finishing fabrics MITSUBISHI RAYON CO Ltd 27 June 1972 [5 July 1971 8 July 1971] 30010/72 Headings D1F and D1S The pilling resistance of a textile material containing staple fibres is enhanced by bringing at least one surface of the material into contact with an abrasive surface carrying thereon numerous abrasive grains having sharp edges and pressing the material onto the abrasive surface without movement of the textile material relative to the abrasive surface, thereby to form defects (scratches) on the fibres distributed on the material surface without substantially changing the appearance and hand feeding of the textile material. The textile material may be in the form of a web, tow, sliver, roving yarn, non-woven fabric, spun yarn, woven fabric or knitted fabric. Specified fibres are polyamide, polyester, polyacrylonitrile, polypropylene, polyvinyl alcohol, triacetate and diacetate fibres, rayon, wool or cotton. In one embodiment, Fig. 1, textile piece goods, e.g. sweaters, skirts and dresses, are pressed between plates 2, 3. The upper movable plate 2 has an abrasive layer 4 theeron and the lower fixed plate 3 has thereon either a cushiony layer 8, e.g. of rubber sheet or felt or an abrasive layer. In other embodiments, the textile material is passed between rotating rollers one or both of which has or have an abrasive layer thereon, Figs. 2 and 3 (both not shown), one of which is a grinding wheel and the other a smooth periphery roller, Fig. 5 (not shown), or one of which has an abrasive layer thereon and the other a cushiony layer, Fig. 6 (not shown). In a further embodiment, Fig. 4, the material passes between two rollers 42, 43 with an abrasive cloth 45 endlessly circulating around the roller 42, a movable tension roller 44 being provided. In another embodiment, Fig. 7 (not shown), a roller having an abrasive layer thereon is positioned between two rollers each having a cushiony layer thereon so that one surface of the material is pressed twice by the abrasive layer. In a still further embodiment, Fig. 8, the material passes around a large diameter core roller 82 having an abrasive cloth 84 thereon, three small rollers 85a, 85b, 85c having cushiony layers 87a, 87b, 87c thereon pressing the material three times against the roller 82. In yet another embodiment, Fig. 9, for pressing a yarn at least twice, three times as shown, a grinding wheel 93 engages a roller 94 having a cushiony layer 96 thereon and a guide roller 92 is located parallel thereto. Specified abrasive grains are metallic grains having a Shore hardness of at least 50, e.g. carbon steel quenched by h.f. induction or inorganic material having a hardness of at least 5 in Mohs scale, e.g. diamond, boron carbide, silicon carbide, crystallized alumina, zircon, garnet, jade, rock crystal, silica, quartz, orthoclase, apatite or mixtures of these materials. Preferably, the abrasive grains have a size of 16-250Á and are distributed in a density of at least 50 grains/cm<SP>2</SP>.
