Abstract

1365087 Acrolein; acetic anhydride BAYER AG 13 Dec 1971 [12 Dec 1970 3 May 1971] 57743/71 Heading C2C Acrolein and acetic anhydride are prepared by heating a diacetoxypropene to 50-300‹ C. in the presence of at least one acid and/or at least one halide of a metal of one of Groups II to VIII or of B, Si, As, Sb or Te. Liquid or gas phase may be used. The diacetoxypropene may be obtained by reacting propylene, O 2 and acetic acid in the presence of a noble metal catalyst to give allyl acetate which is then reacted in a second stage with O 2 and acetic acid in the presence of a noble metal catalyst. Alternatively propylene may be reacted with O 2 and acetic acid in the presence of a noble metal catalyst to give diacetoxy-propene and allylacetate, the latter being separated and recycled.
