Abstract
1364680 Spray drying BUSS AG 5 Aug 1971 [5 Aug 1970] 36924/71 Heading B1B [Also in Division F4] A solution, suspension or paste is dried by feeding it by means of screw conveyor 6 to rotary impeller 7 which atomizes the material radially across a horizontal housing 1 supplied through pipe 13 with hot air which dries the material and carries it in suspension to outlet 14. The hot air is given rotating turbulence by paddle cascade 26, the paddle angle and pitch being adjustable to obtain optimum flow velocity. Displacement element 17 divides the drying space into two parts, undisturbed rotational turbulence prevailing in the front part. Element 17 contains the driving mechanism 9 for the impeller 7. The housing contains a drum 10 which is rotated on hollow shaft 4 by driving wheel 11 and chain 12. The wall of the drum is cooled with cold air supplied through pipe 24. Material is prevented from sticking to the inner surface of the drum by lamellar scraping knives 19 mounted in a frame 20 of a vibrator 21. In an alternative construction, the drum is stationary and the scraping knives are rotary. The apparatus may be used for drying viscous dyestuff pastes. The drying of free-flowing solids is referred to.
