1363993 Making electrical components R A SCRANTON INDUSTRIES Inc 23 May 1972 [6 July 1971] 24233/72 Heading B3A Apparatus for cutting and bending axial leads of electrical components comprises a reciprocable block 36, Fig. 10, having a component carrying section 46 disposed between a pair of parallel cutters 30, the section 46 having a pair of surfaces 104 for supporting the leads of a component and stop means 106 located behind the plane of the cutting edge of the cutters 30 for engaging the inner ends of the leads, and a fixed block 66, Fig. 1, having a pair of spaced shearing blades 72 disposed in the path of the section 46 and whose inner surfaces are spaced apart a distance slightly greater than the pair of surfaces 104 for bending the leads as the section 46 passes therebetween. In operation, with the block 36 in its rearmost position, the lowermost component in a feed shoot 90, Fig. 1, drops between lead slots 84 and on to the surfaces 104. On forward movement of the block 36 by means of an eccentric drive mechanism 50, the shear blades 30 and 72 co-operate to shear the outer ends of the leads. The component is then momentarily held against the rearward face 124 of the shear blades 72 until the inner ends of the leads are engaged by shoulders 106. Further forward movement of the block 36 causes the leads to be bent as shown in Fig. 12. On the return stroke, the tip of a lever 116, which has ridden over and is now behind the component, engages the component and holds it as the block 36 moves rearwardly, and upon the forward edge of section 46 passing the component, the latter drops into a receptacle. Wear resistant carbide bars may be used on the shear edges of blades 72.
