Abstract

1362812 Evaporative heat exchangers BALTIMORE AIRCOIL CO Inc 28 June 1971 [19 May 1971] 54081/73 Divided out of 1362811 Heading F4K In a heat exchanger comprising an injector duct in which air is evaporatively cooled by contact with sprayed water, which subsequently collects in a sump 16 whilst the cooled air passes out of the duct, the spray means 15 are located at the air inlet end of the duct to cause a concurrent flow of air through the duct, and a plurality of dampers 19m are located in the air discharge end of the duct and are pivotally adjustable between an open and a closed position to regulate air flow through the duct. The dampers are preferably actuated by a thermal sensor 36 located in the water outlet line 17 from the sump 16. 19s are fixed vanes to guide the air discharging from the heat exchanger upwardly. 34 is a heat load through which the cooled water is directed before returning to the spray heads 16 of the heat exchanger. In the form shown, the increase in air pressure in the duct as the dampers are closed is relieved by leaking the air through port 38 into a plenum chamber 40, the air being recycled to the duct via a slit 43. Alternatively (Figs. 1, 3, 4 and 5) after partial closure of the dampers the sensor 36 acts to reduce the water supply to the spray heads.
