Abstract

1362725 End face seals LUCAS AEROSPACE Ltd 3 Jan 1973 [5 Jan 1972] 444/72 Heading F2B A rotary shaft seal comprises inner and outer axial parts, the inner part 12 having a shaftbearing sleeve portion 14 with a radially outwardly directed flange 15 and the outer part 13 having a sleeve portion 16 with a radially inwardly directed flange 17, the sleeve portions and flanges defining an annular groove 18 receiving a first sealing member, 0-ring 18, and one, 15, of the flanges having a recess 24 housing a second sealing member 26 which engages a shoulder of the shaft 10 or a part 29 sealingly connected to the shaft; the parts 12, 13 having adjacent non-circular surfaces, e.g. flats 22, to prevent realtive rotation between them. The member 26 is urged against the part 29 by a spring washer 21 compressed between the flange 15 and a retainer ring 20 abutting a shoulder in the sleeve portion 16. The outer part 13 is sealed in the shaft housing 11 by a seal 28. In a modification, Figs. 3-5 (not shown) the flats (22) on the part (13) are replaced by bronze strips (32), bronzed or welded in slots (31) formed in the sleeve portion (16).
