Abstract

1362760 Tiltable lifting-tongs HEPPENSTALL CO 20 April 1972 [21 May 1971] 18383/72 Heading B8H Tiltable lifting-tongs comprise a base member 14 secured to a support arm 57, a fixed jaw 16 secured to the base member and a movable jaw 17. A lever arm 50 is pivoted at 53 to the support arm and is pivotally connected at one end to the movable jaw 17 to provide the gripping force. A suspension cable 107 passes over pulleys 96, 102 of a tilting mechanism and is connected at opposite ends to the support arm and the mid-point pivot 113 of a toggle link 110 respectively. The toggle link is pivotally connected at opposite ends to the base member and to the other end of the lever arm 50 whereby to increase the leverage ratio applied to said movable jaw and maintain said ratio substantially constant when the tongs are tilted. A link 54 mounted between the base member and the lever arm prevents excessive movement of the lever arm and thereby retains the sections 111, 112 of the toggle link subtending an angle less than 180 degrees. A motor (not shown) is mounted on the base member 14 to move the jaw 17 relative to the fixed jaw and a further motor (not shown) is coupled to the pulley 96 to tilt the tongs in a vertical plane.
