Abstract

1362550 Crash barriers A SLIBAR 14 Aug 1971 38240/71 Heading E1G An energy-absorbing roadside crash barrier comprises a barrier member 2 (shown as a wire lattice fence) supported in a vertical plane by one or more horizontal cables 6, 7 carried by the vertical upper end portions of obtuseangled posts 1, the lower end portion of each post being inclined away from the road towards an anchorage 3 to provide a bending zone B. As shown the cables 6, 7 rest releasably in open-topped brackets 4, 5 on the posts, and the barrier member includes a series of upper and lower vertical cables 8, 10 threaded through fencing 2, the upper cables 8 being slidably anchored between the cables 6, 7 while the lower cables 10 extend between the cable 7 and ground spikes 11. The lower end of post 1, shown tubular, is welded to a plate 13 secured by screws 14 to an anchorage channel 12. On impact the posts 1 bend, the cables 6, 7 are released, the spikes 11 are withdrawn, and the fencing 2 is pushed in front of the vehicle.
