Abstract

1362207 Crystallizing from a liquid KOBE Steel Ltd 11 Aug 1971 [9 June 1971] 37622/71 Heading BIG Crystals are grown substantially isothermally by gradually altering the pressure to which a solid/liquid system is subjected. As shown, a mixture of, for example, p-xylene and m-xylene is placed in container 1 and subjected to a pressure of 550 kgm cm<SP>-2</SP> at 9.7‹C. Seed crystal of p-xylene is placed in container 6 at the same pressure. The seed crystal is transferred to container 1, through valve 9, and the pressure gradually increased substantially isothermally to 2900 kgm cm<SP>-2</SP> by acting on member 3 to reduce the free volume within the container. The liquid phase may then be removed, through valve 8 to container 4. Crystals of over 99% pure p-xylene are obtained. In another example, a mixture of benzene and methyl red was solidified at a pressure of 800 kg cm<SP>-2</SP> and 25‹C and then allowed to liquefy isothermally by gradually reducing the pressure. When 20% of the crystalline material had liquefied, 99.2% of the methyl red was found to be in the liquid phase. Reference is made to the use of the method for separating optical isomers and isotopes of hydrogen and uranium.
