Abstract

1362022 Mineral-mining installations GEWERKSCHAFT EISENHUTTE WESTFALIA 5 July 1971 [8 July 1970] 31308/71 Heading E1F A method of mining minerals comprises heating a mineral face by heaters that are then moved away from the face in a predetermined sequence so that the removal of at least one of the heaters allows of operation of cutting means on the heated mineral. The apparatus for carrying out the method involves combining with a longwall mining installation in which cutting means, e.g. a plough 30, is moved along a face conveyer 1 advanceable by an associated ram and roof-propping system 57, 2 heaters 5 of which one or more can be displaced transversely of the conveyer. Preferably one or more heaters are reciprocable by a jack 7, 8 in a frame 6 pivotally carried by legs 11, 12 pivoted to the roof-propping system 57. The height of the frame can be varied by actuation of a jack 19 acting between the leg 12 and the roof-propping system 57. Control means are provided for limiting advance of the heaters towards a face, for causing appropriate withdrawal of the heaters to allow of passage of the cutting means past the heaters, and advance of the installation as mineral is mined from the face.
