Abstract
1362071 Catalytic reactions BADISCHE ANILIN- & SODA-FABRIK AG 13 Aug 1971 [14 Aug 1970] 38030/71 Heading B1F [Also in Division C2] In a process for carrying out an exothermic reaction between a gas and a liquid in the presence of a catalytic fixed bed with improved space-time yields and improved removal of heat, the gas and liquid are passed concurrently downwardly through a reactor containing the fixed bed, and downwardly through the fixed bed in the form of transition flow referred to below by passing the gas and liquid concurrently downwardly through the fixed bed so as to cause a pressure difference #p to be set up between the upper and lower ends of the bed, and controlling the rate of the reaction so as to maintain the ratio of the rate by volume of gas fed to the bed to the rate by volume of off gas produced from the reaction after correcting to N.T.P., at from 4:1 to 100:1, the gas fed to the bed being at least partly consumed during the reaction and the rate of flow, F, of the liquid through the bed being at such a value t that, at a constant rate of feeding the gas to the bed, the change of pressure difference #p with respect to changes in liquid flow rate i.e. d(#P)/dF, is at least twice as great when F equals t as when F equals l, being a liquid flow rate which causes at least predominantly laminar flow of the liquid through the bed, and the value t not being great enough to cause pulsing of pressure differences #p. The transition flow is as defined in A.I. Ch. E. Journal, Vol. 10 (1964) pp 952-953. In Example 1, in which butynediol is formed from formaldehyde and acetylene, column 1, Fig. 2, is packed with pelleted supported catalyst comprising 85% by weight of silica gel, 12% by weight of CuO and 3% by weight of Bi, 37% aqueous formaldehyde is introduced at 11a, at 1 litre/hr, acetylene at 5 atm guage is fed through 9a at 120 litres/hr (S.T.P.) so that the pressure differential between gas feed to the column and the off gas is 0.3 atm. gauge. Product is withdrawn at 15. In Ex. 2, 2-ethyhexanol-1 is prepared by hydrogenation of 2-ethylhexen-2-al-1, and in Ex. 3 trimethylhydroquinone is prepared by the hydrogenation of trimethyl-p-benzoquinone in isobutanol.
