Abstract
1361994 Spot-type disc brakes GIRLING Ltd 22 June 1972 [22 June 1971 6 July 1971] 29295/71 and 31708/71 Heading F2E To facilitate replacement of the pads 28 in a spot-type disc brake without removal of the road wheel the pads 28 are mounted on removable drag-taking pins 43 and anti-rotation pins 44, only one each of pins 43, 44 being associated with a given pad. Pins 43 pass through holes in the two halves 22, 33 of the caliper housing 21 and in the embodiment shown are retained by means of a keeper 46 and bolt 47. The pin, 43, head may be plate-like, being secured by bolts 66, Fig. 9 (not shown). Seals 50, 51 prevent the ingress of dirt into the holes. The pins 43 may be screw-threaded into one caliper half 23 and be a sliding fit in the other 22. As shown in Fig. 6, the pins 43 may be screw-threaded into a threaded collar 52 retained in position by a grub screw 53. In an alternative construction, Fig. 7 (not shown), a threaded keeper (56) is provided in the caliper half 23 which, after removal, exposes a threaded bore (58) in the pin 43. A keyway (54) at the other end of pin 43 in caliper half 22 allows an extractor and bolt, the latter engaging in the bore, to remove the pin. In a modification of this construction, Fig. 11 (not shown), the keeper is not threaded but is a plug retained by a circlip. In a further embodiment, Fig. 8 (not shown), the threaded keeper is cup-shaped through the bottom of which extends a spigot (60) to which the keeper is locked by a circlip (61) and a washer (62). Two pistons 26, and cylinders 27 are provided on each side of the disc to actuate the pads.
