Abstract
1361078 Urea I MAVROVIC 21 Oct 1971 [10 Nov 1970] 48887/71 Heading C2C Urea is produced in a process in which ammonia and carbon dioxide together with recycled ammonium carbamate are reacted at elevated temperature and pressure, wherein [1] the urea-reactor effluent is heated under reduced pressure in a decomposer to give an aqueous urea solution and to decompose ammonium carbamate to ammonia and carbon dioxide, [2] vaporized ammonia, carbon dioxide and water vapour from step [1] are passed to a condensing system in which the vapour stream is partially or totally condensed to give a liquid ammoniumcarbamate containing stream which is recycled to the urea reactor, and [3] the refractive index of the liquid phase recycled to the reactor is determined and the ratio of ammonium carbamate to water in this liquid phase is regulated as a function of this refractive index.
