Abstract

1360586 Mounting pads of spot-type disc brakes; noise prevention SUMITOMO ELEC TRIC INDUSTRIES Ltd 22 Nov 1972 [25 Nov 1971] 54020/72 Heading F2E In a spot-type disc brake where an hydraulically operated piston and cylinder mechanism is mounted in each of the opposing legs of a caliper straddling a portion of the disc, and a circular Friction pad bonded to a backing plate is interposed between each piston and the appropriate braking face of the disc, each backing plate 4 has a tab 6 projecting radially from it and slidably received in a groove 3 provided in the appropriate leg of the caliper; means for preventing "flutter" of the pad is secured to the rear face of the pad and has a member urging the tab towards a wall of the groove. As shown, the above-mentioned means comprises a semicircular plate 18 (e.g. of steel 0-3 mm. thick) having a radially-projecting resilient member 9, a portion 14 of which is stepped to fit into a recess 15 in backing plate 4, and has integral with it a resilient finger plate 16 orientated at right angles to the remainder of the member 9. As shown, the resilient finger plate 16 is corrugated, and in use bears against tab 6 to urge it towards a wall 5 of groove 3 under the influence of braking torque (see the dotted arrow in Fig. 4). All noises are thereby eliminated.
