Abstract

1360358 Commutators GENERAL ELECTRIC CO 31 Aug 1972 [1 Sept 1971] 40327/72 Heading H2A [Also in Division H1] Sparking at a brush/commutator contact is reduced by placing metal oxide varistor material between adjacent commutator segments, the material providing a low resistance current path at the moment when a brush and segment part contact, but rapidly increasing its resistance as the current level falls. In the embodiment shown in Fig. 2, the commutator comprises conducting film segments 12 on a solid varistor body 10, but in that of Fig. 3 (not shown) the segments are in the form of bars (15) disposed in slots (14). In the embodiment of Fig. 4 (not shown), a hollow varistor body 10 on a spider system (17) is used, whilst in Fig. 5 (not shown) conductive bars (15) and varistor spacer bars (10) are mounted to form a cylinder. In the embodiment of Fig. 8 (not shown), varistor material (26) is placed in parallel with a centrifugal switch (25; see Division H1). The varistor material in all cases is a polycrystalline ceramic, e.g. zinc oxide with the addition of the oxide of bismuth, aluminium, iron, magnesium or calcium.
