1359498 Making boxes RENGO KK 22 Sept 1971 [28 Dec 1970] 44274/71 Heading B5D [Also in Division B8] A carton having four sides folded up from a central base portion and having sides of double thickness enclosing extensions on adjacent sides is erected in apparatus by means of belts which fold over two opposite sides and by a plunger mechanism which erects the four sides and turns inwardly the double thickness of one pair of walls. The blanks 32 are stacked against plates 34, 40, Fig. 2, and fed by a roll 35, driven from a motor 52 to rubber covered feed rolls 36, 37 adjustable by a handle 88. Each blank then passes between guides 142, 143 where a belt 125 passing round a pulley 117 moves it forward so that its base is gripped by belts 133, 135. Two further belts 163 engaging each lateral edge of each blank and a tapering guide member 203, Fig. 17, fold over portions 391 which adhere to adhesive stripes 407 applied from nozzles 214 when each blank trips a switch adjacent the entrance to the nip of belts 133, 135. On leaving belts 133, 135 each blank passes to belts 279 which carry it beneath a plunger 324 and as the blank trips a member 318 a solenoid operated valve causes cylinders 340 to be actuated and plates 342 to advance to a position beneath, but spaced from, the box base. A solenoid operated valve controlling the plunger 324 is then actuated and as the plunger descends members 289, 291 and 292 fold up the box sides. At the end of the downward stroke of the plunger a member 329 carried thereby trips a switch and the plunger rises, the box being supported on the plates 342. Upon actuation of a further valve, cylinders 307 and brought into operation and arms 297, 298 and connecting piece 300 move a bending piece 303 which folds over the inner thickness of walls 392. Subsequently the box falls on to a conveyer belt 353 and is carried beneath rolls (369, 380, Fig. 24) which square up the top edges 394. The lateral spacing of the various belts and guide members for the blanks can be adjusted by screwed rods having left and right hand threads so as to accommodate blanks of different size. Different parts of the apparatus are driven by separate motors through reduction gears and by adjustment of speeds it can be arranged that the next blank reaches the belts 279 when the previous erected box falls on to conveyer 353. An electric circuit (Fig. 35) controls the machine and includes a time switch which stops the machine if a box is not erected in a given time due to jamming of the blanks.
