Abstract

1358862 Lactams IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 18 Nov 1971 [24 Feb 1971] 5339/71 Heading C2C Lactams are produced by heating a diamine or heterocyclic amine with water in the presence of a hydrogenation catalyst. Examples of the process are the conversion of tetramethylene diamine or pyrrolidine to γ-butyrolactam (2- pyrrolidone), pentamethylene diamine or piperidine to #-valerolactam (α-piperidone), hexamethylene diamine or hexamethylene imine to #-caprolactam, dodecamethylene diamine to dodecanolactam, and N-methylpyrrolidine to N- methylbutyrolactam.
