1358776 Casting processes INSTITUT ELEKTROSVARKI IMENI E O PATONA AKADEMII NAUK UKRAINSKOI SSR 9 June 1972 [11 June 1971] 27131/72 Heading B3F A method of casting a large (e.g. 190 tonne) ingot comprises supplying slag to a mould, the slag being either molten or melted in the mould, heating the slag by an electric current supplied thereto by electrodes and pouring a plurality of discrete charges of molten metal into the mould, each charge comprising 5 to 25% by weight of the ingot to be cast. The charges are preferably complete heats (e.g. 10 tonne) from electric arc furnaces. Apart from the first charge, each subsequent charge is poured on to the molten surface of the previous charge, when the previous charge is at least half-solidified. The solidification of the metal proceeds from the base upwardly with mixing of the metal of subsequent heats. The mixing may be enhanced and the formation of a metal shell and slag sheath about the rim of an ingot inhibited by providing several (e.g. 6) electrodes about the circumference of the mould and reciprocating the mould about its vertical axis during solidification. After the last charge has been poured the electrodes are moved towards the centre of the ingot to avoid the formation of pipe.
