Abstract

1358539 Treating exhaust gas COWL INDUSTRIES Ltd 18 June 1971 [19 June 1970] 29825/70 Heading F1B Silencer for engine exhaust or compressor intake comprises a housing consisting of a cylindrical portion 11 and conical end caps 12 and 13. The cylindrical portion consists of a metal sheet formed into a spiral, the inner end having the same radius as an inlet pipe 16 and the outer end being welded to the outer surface of the outermost turn of the spiral. The flat end surfaces of the spiral are secured to sheet metal bulk-heads 17 and 25 which have perforations equal to about 40% of their area. The spaces between the bulk-heads and the end caps are filled with sound absorbent material e. g. rock-wool. A sound absorbing lining 22 is attached to one surface of the spiral, or is held against it by a perforated or expanded metal sheet 23. Gas enters the pipe 16, which is welded to the end cap 13 and to an opening in the bulk-head 17, and passes around the spiral duct 15 to the outermost turn thereof. Deflector plates 24 direct the gas to an aperture at the periphery of the bulk-head 25. A channel member 29 extends between the bulkhead 25 and a further bulk-head 27, which defines with the cap 14, an expansion chamber 30 communicating with an outlet pipe 31. Alternatively the channel member may extend from the bulk-head 25 to the outlet pipe 31. Instead of discharging the gases axially, an outlet opening may be formed in the outer surface of the cylindrical portion, adjacent the position of the plates 24, so that the gases leave tangentially.
