Abstract
1358538 Electro-deposited composite coatings BRISTOL AEROJET Ltd 8 June 1971 [11 June 1970] 28375/70 Heading C7B [Also in Division F2] An electro-deposited composite coating comprises, as deposited, a matrix which is at least 50 per cent by weight Co and particles included in the matrix which are at least 50 per cent by weight chromium carbide, at least 50 per cent by weight of the particles having a particle size of less than 10 microns. The particles may comprise 5 per cent by weight of tungsten carbide particles. The coating, after electro-deposition thereof, may be treated to diffuse Co into the carbide particles thereby forming a complex chromium-cobalt-carbide and increasing the volume of the particles. The treatment may be heat treatment (e.g. at 850-1100‹ C for 2-24 hours followed by a water or oil quench) and/or working (such as grinding or lapping which raises the surface temperature). The electrodeposition may be performed in apparatus as shown in Specification 1218179 or 1329081. The coatings may be applied to aeroengine components, bearing surfaces, rocket nozzles or tubes or nozzles carrying abrasive substances. In the Example, a piece of steel is degreased in trichloroethylene vapour, blasted with alumina shot and coated at 4a/dm<SP>2</SP> in a bath at pH 4À7 and at 50‹ C comprising CoSO 4 , NaCl, H 3 BO 3 and Cr 3 C 2 powder of particle size 2-5 microns mean diameter.
