1358368 Detecting combustible gases electrically VSESOJUZNY NAUCHNOISSLEDOVATELSKY INSTITUT ANALITICHESKOGO PRIBO ROSTROENIA 8 Jan 1973 1003/73 Heading G1N An apparatus for measuring alcohol in breath comprises a gas sampling unit including a calibrated vessel 9 divided by a bellows 10 into a gas sampling chamber 11 and an air chamber 12; the gas chamber being filled by gas flow from mouthpiece 7, moisture separator 8 electro-pneumatic relay 18 and non-return valve 14 so that as the gas chamber fills fresh air is expelled from air chamber 12 via duct 23 to purge reaction chamber 17 of the products of any previous analysis; when the gas chamber is filled means 13 closes contacts of switch 29 to actuate a system of relays and motor-controlled switches Fig.3 (not shown) whereby the relay 18 is switched to block further ingress of gas to the chamber 11, the 200 c.c. gas sample therein being expelled to the reaction chamber 17, due to weight of the means 13 collapsing the bellows, by way of duct 16 and relay 18, and absorbed on an aluminium oxide body 25, next a heating coil 26 is energized and also a bridge circuit Fig. 5 (not shown) including a catalytic temperature sensitive resistance element 27 and a non- catalytic temperature sensitive resistance element 28 so that the gas is desorbed from the body and its combustible constituents burnt on the bridge element, the resulting signal being passed to an indication unit. The apparatus is maintained at a temperature of 45-50‹C by a heating element 30.
