Abstract
1358071 Cathode-ray tube displays INTERNATIONAL COMPUTERS Ltd 12 May 1972 [15 May 1971] 15153/71 Heading H4T The Specification is concerned with drawing arcuate lines on the screen of a cathode-ray display tube (by appropriate X and Y deflection of the beam) with an accuracy such that the maximum difference in position of the chord actually traced and the true arcuate path is less than the spot resolution of the tube beam for each incremental deflection of the beam such incremental deflections specifying the radius of the arc in binary code form so that the maximum radial value for an arc is 2<SP>n</SP>-1 where n is the maximum capacity of a binary register. This is, notionally, taken as 2<SP>n</SP> and it is shown that for the maximum, expressible, radius the maximum incremental angle of beam deflection # (see Fig. 1) may be assumed to be 2(2)¢/2n/2. From this incremental deflections are derived (in terms of the values in the registers) and assuming the arc is to be drawn relative to an initial angle #, the start co-ordinates X = R cos # and Y = R sin # are calculated and held in respective binary position registers and by "right-shifting" the values in the appropriate registers by half its capacity n( = 2n/2) and by n + 1 places ( = 2<SP>n+1</SP>) the actual incremental values #X and #Y may be obtained. These are then employed for beam deflection and additionally are added to the values standing in the register to provide the "start position" for the next incremental deflection. Two schematic arrangements for carrying out the arrangement are described with reference to Figs. 2 and 3 (neither shown) one of which includes means responsive to the end of a quadrant for changing the incrementing or decrementing of the beam position register.
