Abstract

1357731 Pharmaceutical base composition ETHICHEM Ltd 19 April 1971 [12 Feb 1970 26 March 1970 (2)] 6784/70 14626/70 and 14627/70 Heading A5B [Also in Division C3] A free-flowing powder suitable for use as a disinfectant carrier or incorporation in a nappy rash ointment comprises (a) starch and optionally talc and (b) a buffer of pH 5.5-7.5 comprising a weak organic acid and a salt of a weak acid and a strong base. The weak organic acid may be acetic, succinic, citric, maleic or malonic acid. The salt of a weak acid may be disodium hydrogen orthophosphate or a sodium, potassium or calcium salt of a weak organic acid. The composition may also include an antiseptic, e.g. hexachlorophene, or benzalkonium chloride and a fatty acid ester, or amide or a fatty alcohol ether as a skin conditioner. It may be prepared by spray drying a liquid dispersion of the ingredients. The powder may be made into an ointment by compounding it with white soft paraffin wax. The ointment may also include a fatty acid, a fatty alcohol, e.g. cetyl alcohol, a fatty ester, e.g. isopropyl myristate, a wax, e.g. paraffin wax, water, a polyol and/or a colourant.
