Abstract
1357029 Laminated products OWENSCORNING FIBERGLAS CORP 28 Sept 1971 [15 Oct 1970] 45190/71 Heading B5N [Also in Divisions C3 B2 and D1] Glass fibres are coated with a sizing composition comprising an aqueous dispersion of (i) a water-solubilized epoxy resin, e.g. the reaction product of a bisphenol A diglycidyl ether, a dialkanolamine and a polyglycol monoester such as polyethylene glycol mono-oleate, (ii) vinyl acetate/N-methylol acrylamide copolymer, (iii) vinyl acetate/ethylene copolymer, (iv) an organosilane, e.g. gamma-methacryloxy propyl trimethoxy-silane, (v) a wax, (vi) a glass-fibre lubricant and (vii) a silicone emulsion. A sheet moulding material is formed by applying a resin or resin filler mixture containing an alkaline earth metal oxide and/or hydroxide, e.g. Ca(OH) 2 to a polyethylene film, applying to this a layer of chopped glass fibres coated as above, applying additional resin paste on top. and another film of protective polyethylene film, compressing and puncturing at least one layer of film and further compressing. The resin mixture may comprise a polyester prepared from maleic anhydride optionally together with phthalio anhydride, and propylene glycol, methyl methacrylate copolymer, dicumyl peroxide and 2,5- dimethylhexyl-2,5-di-(peroxybenzoate), as catalyst, zinc stearate and CaCO 3 or polyethylene as filler.
