Abstract

1356894 Obtaining aluminium from waste FOSECO INTERNATIONAL Ltd 20 Oct 1972 [22 Oct 1971] 48510/72 Heading C7D Particulate aluminium is obtained from aluminium-containing packing waste, by comminuting compressed bales of waste prior to heating at 600 to 660‹ C to carbonize any organic materials and separating the aluminium from the carbonized residue. The comminuting step is preferably effected by a hammer mill or blade grinder, and the comminuted material fed, preferably in flake form, through an inverted hopper to the heattreatment furnace, which may be a rotary tubular furnace. The operation of the furnace may be continuous and self-sustaining once enough heat has been supplied to initiate the calcining, cooling may be necessary to maintain the temperature below 660‹ C. The material after heat-treatment is hammer milled either before or after conveying to a cyclone separator where the carbonaceous material is removed. A sieving operation may be incorporated, oversize products being recycled; the product preferably has a particle size less than 0À15 mm, and may be used in aluminothermic applications.
