Abstract

1356799 Carburetter throttle valves FORD MOTOR CO Ltd 18 Nov 1971 [4 March 1971] 53536/71 Heading F1B A carburetter throttle valve 22 can be positioned in either a fully closed or idle position 34, 36 respectively, the fully closed position arising on shutdown of the engine and during deceleration. Throttle valve 22 is allowed to close only as far as the idle position 36 by actuator 52 of vacuum servo 42 unless a valve 68 is opened by a spring 71 to connect the vacuum servo to a vacuum reservoir 66 which is charged via a restrictor 64. Valve 68 is held closed by a solenoid whose coil 76 is in series with a manifold vacuum controlled switch 80 and ignition switch 72 when these are both closed as in normal running. On deceleration, the vacuum applied to switch 80 via line 92 is enough to open contacts 84 so allowing valve 68 to open to apply vacuum to servo 42 so that the throttle valve can fully close. When ignition switch 72 is turned off, the throttle valve is similarly allowed to close fully by the action of servo 42, but because the vacuum in reservoir 66 decays over a few seconds, the throttle valve resumes the idle position 36 for restarting the engine.
