Abstract

1356481 Gunn oscillators; frequency modulation MULLARD Ltd 4 Jan 1972 245/72 Headings H3T and H3R A microwave Gunn oscillator arrangement has a gyromagnetic body Y in a corner formed between two conductive walls A, B, together with a Gunn device E mounted on one wall with one terminal in contact with the wall and another terminal connected to the other wall by a conductor W so that at the operating frequency the two walls, the Gunn device E and the conductor W form a conductive closed loop less than a half-wavelength long encircling the gyromagnetic body. Means M such as electromagnet or electromagnet and permanent magnet is provided for applying a magnetic field to the gyromagnetic body Y which may be a YIG sphere so as to vary or sweep the frequency of the oscillator. The conductive members A, B are separated by insulating material F so as to permit bias to be applied to the Gunn device E. The conductor W may be of beryllium copper and the output from the oscillator is obtained via a capacitive coupling G (K, Fig. 2, not shown) to a coaxial terminal (T). The axial and rotational position of the sphere Y may be adjusted by a threaded rod (N).
