Abstract

1356164 Production of sulphur SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ NV 12 July 1971 [14 July 1970] 32537/71 Heading C1A Elementary sulphur is produced from hydrogen sulphide according to a Claus-type process having at least two successive Claus-stages wherein a process stream taken from the first stage is fed to a reactor wherein reducible sulphur compounds contained in the process stream are hydrogenated and a hydrogen sulphide-containing stream obtained and is then introduced to the second of the successive Claus stages. Preferably the process stream to be fed to the reactor consists of the effluent of the Claus stage of which effluent elementary sulphur has been removed by condensation to liquid sulphur and subsequent removal thereof, the sulphur-free process stream thereafter preferably being heated to the reaction temperature required for conversion to hydrogen sulphide in the reactor. Preferably the reactor effluent is sufficiently cooled to condense water vapour to liquid water which subsequently is separated as a liquid phase. Hydrogen sulphide dissolved in the liquid phase is then recovered and preferably passed to the next Claus stage. The reducible sulphur compounds are converted into hydrogen sulphide in a reducing atmosphere which may be obtained by introducing a gas mixture containing hydrogen and carbon monoxide, the gas mixture being obtained by partial combustion of hydrocarbons with air, air enriched with oxygen or oxygen. The catalyst used in the reactor may be any conversion catalyst that has distinct hydrogenation activity, preferably containing at least one metal or metal compound from Group VI and/or VIII of the Periodic System of Elements. The conversion is usually carried out at 100 to 1000‹ C. with a space velocity of from 1000 to 20,000 Nm<SP>3</SP> gas per m<SP>3</SP> of catalyst per hour.
