Abstract

1355998 Polysaccharide ester salts UNILEVER Ltd 28 Sept 1971 [30 Sept 1970] 45161/71 Headings C3U and C3F [Also in Division C5] In a detergent composition comprising at least one conventional detergent active agent. there is included in amounts of up to 90% of total weight a polysaccharide detergency builder which is a polysaccharide ester salt having the general formula wherein A is -COOM or -CH 2 OR ; R is hydrogen or a carboxylate ester moiety of the formula M is an alkali metal, ammonium or substituted ammonium (specified) cation; X is orthophenylene, -CH 2 -O-CH 2 -, a linear or branched chain alkylene or alkenylene group of 2-3 carbon atoms, or an addition compound thereof when X is an alkylene group; and n is an integer of from 100 to 5000. Polysaccharides: starches, exemplified by corn, potato, rice, arrowroot, tapioca, wheat and sago starches, cellulose, glycogen, dextrans, di- and trisaccharides such as sucrose, maltose, lactose, cellulose and raffinose, oligo saccharides, polyuronic acids such as pectin and alginic acid, and natural gums such as arabic and acacia. Modified polysaccharides such as hydrolysed starch can also be used. Anhydrides: maleic, succinic, phthalic, glutaric, adipic, citraconic, itaconic and diglycolic anhydrides. One preferred class of compounds is the bisulphite addition product of a polysaccharide ester salt derived from starch, cellulose or sucrose and maleic anhydride having a D.S. value of at least 0À5. The detergent active agents may be anionic, non- ionic, zwitterionic and amphoteric compounds (specified). The other ingredients of the detergent composition including, if desired, other detergency builders, and its physical form are conventional. The examples disclose detergent compositions containing specified detergent active agents, sodium silicate as an anticorrosive agent and the following polysaccharide ester salts: sodium corn starch maleate, phthalate or succinate, disodium corn starch sulphosuccinate, sodium tapioca starch succinate, sodium cellulose succinate and sodium sucrose succinate.
