Abstract
1355519 Tobacco-smoke filters CELANESE CORP 13 May 1971 [13 May 1970] 14707/71 Heading A2C [Also in Division D1] In the production of tobacco smoke filters, a polyolefine filamentary web 10 is drawn from a supply 12, treated with a film-forming organic derivative of cellulose at 16, dried at 18, leaving 10-40% of the derivative base on web plus derivative, on the web transversely stretched (to break up the film into adhering particles) by grooved rollers 22, patterned with straight, zig-zag or sinusoidal depressions by rolls 24, treated with a plasticiser at 26 and condensed into a filter rod at 28 which is chopped off into lengths at 30. The web may be made of polyethylene or polypropylene, of an intrinsic viscosity of from 0.4 to 1.25. The web may have a surface area per gram of 0.2-2.0 sq. metres. The filters may be used together with paper filters or cellulose acetate filter segments in a dual filter. The web may be sandwiched with other webs to form the filter.
