Abstract

1355586 Vehicle safety device ADAMS & ADAMS Ltd 24 Jan 1973 [17 Dec 1971] 58805/71 Heading B7H A safety system for a vehicle is arranged to cause brake application to prevent the vehicle from being driven whenever equipment or part of the vehicle is moved or operated by powertake-off means to a position or condition which is predesignated as being unsafe for driving of the vehicle. For example, the brakes are applied when a crane, lift, or tower carried by the vehicle is operated by a gearbox p.t.o driven by the vehicle engine, or when a tiltable cab is moved to its tilted position. As described movement of the gear lever to engage the p.t.o. mechanically closes a switch 30 and thus energizes a solenoid operated valve 31. Operation of valve 31 then causes brake actuator 35 to apply the brakes. The safety system may be incorporated in a vehicle having an air brake system, a vacuum brake system or a combined hydraulic/air or vacuum brake system.
