Abstract
1355342 Hydrogenation diene/alkylstyrene copolymers SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ NV 29 June 1971 [1 July 1970 25 Sept 1970] 53271/73 and 53272/73 Divided out of 1355341 Heading C3P A partially or totally hydrogenated random copolymer of a conjugated diene, an alkylstyrene and optionally styrene, has a number average molecular wt. of at least 5000. Specified dienes are piperylene, 2,3-dimethylbutadiene, isoprene and butadiene. The styrene may be alkylated in side-chain or ring. A small amount of other monomers may be included. The copolymer may be made by emulsion or solution polymerization using an alkali metal or alkali metal hydrocarbyl catalyst. Randomization may be effected by adjusting rates of monomer addition or by using a randomizer the product can be hydrogenated after recovery, or in situ, preferably after catalyst deactivation. Preferably at least 50% of the olefinic, and less than 10% of the aromatic unsaturation is removed. Examples describe hydrogenated copolymers of butadiene with (1) styrene and p-tert-butylstyrene; (2) vinyl toluene; (3) p-tert-butylstyrene; the hydrogenation catalyst being aluminium triethyl/nickel 2-ethylhexanoate.
