Abstract

1355201 Vehicle bumpers A S BECKLEY 5 May 1971 [8 May 1970 22 Feb 1971] 13227/71 Heading B7J A motor vehicle comprises a chassis frame, a body shell 1, a transversely extending and substantially vertically arranged rigid bumper plate 4 extending along one end of the body and covering at least 50% of the maximum projected cross-sectional area of the vehicle body, and a mass of cellular polymeric material 11 covering the face of bumper plate 4 remote from the frame. The bumper plate may be reinforced by at least the side portions of the body shell 1, by a frame cross-member 7 and by rigid bracing 21 from the engine 22. The bumper plate 4 may be a sheet of polymeric laminate supported by, and possibly integral with, the body shell 1 which may also be of the laminate and has flattened ends. The cellular polymeric mass 11 may carry a second vertical sheet of laminate 13, cemented to mass 11 and to an outer cellular polymeric mass 14, and supported from sheet 4 by inextensible connecting elements 17. Preferred dimensions of the equipment, and preferred properties of the laminate and cellular polymeric material are given. Interior crash pads 30 and 31 are also described, pad 30 having a recess to accommodate the steering wheel which has a helmetshaped shock-absorbing pad (43), Figs. 6-8 (not shown), mounted thereon.
