Abstract
1354935 Selective signalling TOYO RADIO CO Ltd 17 Sept 1971 43372/71 Heading G4H A portable data collecting system comprises a data input unit having a keyboard for generating electric signals, and a data recorder unit having a temporary memory for storing the electric signals, a storage recording medium, means for continually reading the stored contents of the temporary memory and recording them on to the recording medium, and means for adding parity information to the stored contents of the temporary memory after the contents are read out of the temporary memory. The data input unit can be hand-held and is connected by a cable to the data recorder unit which can be hung from the operator's shoulder. The recording medium is magnetic tape in a detachable cartridge. The data recorder unit can be connected to a data transmitter unit wherein the data is converted to frequency-shift signals in acoustic form, the transmitter unit having a holder for a telephone handset whereby the acoustic signals can be sent over the telephone wires to a computer. Initially, the data entered on the keyboard is encoded in a diode matrix, serialized by gates and inserted in a multi-digit recirculating shift register (the temporary memory) with concurrent shortening of the recirculation loop to shift the data already in the register into different time slots. Detection of marker characters at particular positions in the loop at a particular time, indicating that it is full, causes read-out serially-by-digit, parallel-bybit, the data passing via a code converter, and a circuit which generates and appends parity bits, to the magnetic tape. The data is subsequently read from the tape, parity-checked, code-converted, serialized, and inserted into the shift register, from which it is removed in serialparallel form, serialized and, after generation and appending of parity bits, converted to frequency shift form &c. as mentioned above for transmission over the telephone network. The data input unit also has operation and error-indicating lamps, and display tubes indicating the last 6 digits entered into the shift register from the keyboard or from the magnetic tape. A back-space key is provided.
