Abstract

1354564 Polytetramethylene terephthalate yarns FIBER INDUSTRIES Inc 22 June 1971 [22 June 1970] 29177/71 Heading B5B Yarns are prepared from a copolymer or polymer mixture consisting of at least 85% by weight of poly(tetramethylene) terephthalate having an intrinsic viscosity (as herein defined) of between 10 and 50. The polymer is melt-spun into between 5 and 70 filaments at a temperature between 240‹ and 280‹ C., the yarn wound up at a rate between 1000 and 10,000 feet per minute and then stretched to a ratio of between 1À0 and 5À0 at a temperature of between 60‹ and 180‹ C. During the extrusion step the thread-line tension is at least 0À09 gm. on each filament. It is also essential that the total spinning thread-line tension is equal to or greater than a number derived from the total spun denier of the yarn, the relative viscosity of the polymer, the spinning temperature, the number of filaments extruded and the windup speed. The stretching step may be performed in one or in two stages, the choice being by the result of a calculation involving the windup speed, the spinning temperature, the temperature of the feed roll in the drawing stage, the relative viscosity of the polymer and the number of filaments extruded. If a two-stage process is used the first stage is a cold one, stretching the yarn at a draw ratio of between 1À0 and 1À6.
