1354560 Hydrostatic drives ZAHNRAD-FABRIK FRIEDRICHSHAFEN AG 15 Sept 1971 [23 Oct 1970] 43008/71 Heading B7H A vehicle axle comprises an elongated housing in which at least one hydro-motor, forming a tractive power source and transmission elements and gear means associated with the latter are mounted, wherein the axis of the or each motor is arranged longitudinally of the housing which also constitutes the housing for the hydromotor. Conveniently the motor is provided with output shafts 6, 7, Fig. 1, extending towards both ends of the housing and a rotatable hollow shaft 3 is connected through a reduction gear 4 to a differential gear 5 with the output shaft 6 passing through the shaft 3. Brakes 8, 9 and reduction gears 10, 11 which may be epicyclic or portal are provided at the ends of the output shafts 6, 7. In another embodiment, Fig. 2 (not shown), the two motors are arranged coaxially one behind the other with the adjacent ends of the output shafts connectible by means of a clutch (25). In a further embodiment, Fig. 3, two motors 34, 35 are mounted parallel to a two-part central main shaft 38, 38<SP>1</SP> and are connected thereto by means of gear-wheels 41, 42 co-operating with differential gear 43. The shaft 38 passes through a tube 48 which is sealed with respect to the central housing part 31. Axially adjustable intermediate elements 49, 50 serve to secure the vehicle axle to an associated vehicle and serve as supports for the wheel gears 46, 47. The hydro-motors may be of constant volume and/or variable volume. Oil pressure pipes for the motors may be cast integrally or machined into the housing 30 which is fabricated of cast iron.
