Abstract

1354232 Extracting and inserting electrical contacts; gripping tools ITT INDUSTRIES Inc 23 March 1972 [31 March 1971] 13589/72 Headings B4C and B4W A tool 22 for extracting an electrical contact pin 162 from a bore 154 of an insulator 152 in which the pin is retained by spring fingers 158 of a clip 156, comprises two members 82, 84 secured together at their rear ends 86, 88, the forward ends of the members being operable, against the resilience of the members themselves or a spring placed therebetween, bypressure applied to pads 136 to permit semicylindrical portions 34 to envelope a conductor 174 when the pressure is released. The conductor passes between the portions 34 and over knurled portions 122, 124 on the members 82, 84 respectively. Sliding of the tool along the conductor and into the bore causes the fingers to be moved out of engagement with flange 168 of the pin. The pin can then be extracted. Each portion 34 is a part of a nose piece 38 secured as by welding to a carrier 26, and each carrier, which is secured to arm 112, or 114 by a screw 116, comprises a tongue 58 and a recess 64. When the forward ends of the members are closed the tongue of one carrier will engage in the recess of the other carrier. A resilient cap 142 secured to the members is provided for protecting the portions 34 when the tool is not in use. When it is desired to use the tool to insert the pin, the carriers 26 will be replaced by other carriers each provided with a nose piece having a semi-cylindrical portion of lesser external diameter than the flange 168.
