The mixture represented by the formula Sn[N(CH 3 ) 2 ] 1À3 [N(CH 3 )CH 2 CH 2 N(CH 3 ) 2 ] 2À7 and ([CH 3 ) 2 NCH 2 CH 2 S] 2 Sn[N(CH 3 )]) 2 and the preparation of a Group IV metal compound by reacting one mole of a compound of formula M(NR<SP>1</SP> 2 ) b-a R a with one or more moles of a compound of the formula H(X-A-Y) wherein M is an element of Group IV of the Periodic System having an atomic number greater than 14: R<SP>1</SP> is a methyl or ethyl group; R is a hydrocarbyl group; X is O, S, NR or PR; A is a bivalent organic radical such that X and Y are separated by not more than 3 carbon atoms; Y is OR, SR, NR 2 , PR 2 or a heterocyclic ring system whereof the heteroatom is O, S, N or P which is not directly linked to hydrogen; b is the valency of m; and a has a value of 0, 1 or 2. The compounds produced according to the invention may be used as third components of a polymerization catalyst for the polymerization of olefins.
