Abstract
1354092 Cell with organic electrolyte P R MALLORY & CO Inc 12 March 1973 [10 March 1972] 11821/73 Heading H1B A cell comprises an active metal anode, an inert cathode at which nitrogen dioxide depolarizer is reduced, and a non-aqueous organic electrolyte. The preferred anode metal is lithium, sodium, or potassium. The nitrogen dioxide may be dissolved in the electrolyte or the cathode may be permeable and the nitrogen dioxide supplied thereto from an external source. A preferred cathode comprises a gas-permeable membrane of PTFE. The cathode may include a catalyst, e.g. activated carbon, a platinum group metal, silver, or a semi-conductor "defect" oxide or nitride, and may also include a titanium support screen. The electrolyte may comprise propylene carbonate, acetonitrile or a mixture thereof and the conductivity may be improved by dissolving therein an inorganic salt, e.g. the salt of an alkali or alkaline-earth metal with an ion selected from Cl 4 -, PF 6 -, BF 4 ,-. The preferred salt is lithium perchlorate. A plastics separator may be placed between the anode and cathode.
