1353382 Tobacco compositions; tobaccosmoke filters WILKINSON SWORD Ltd 26 Jan 1972 [4 Feb 1971] 40396/73 Divided out of 1353381 Heading A2C Agents capable of producing a cool sensation during smoking are added to tobacco or tobacco-smoke filters, the agents being 3-substituted p-menthanes of the formula: wherein R is -CONH 2 or -COOR<SP>1</SP>, where R<SP>1</SP> is hydrogen; an alkali or alkaline earth metal atom, or an ammonium or substituted ammonium radical; a hydroxyaliphatic radical of up to 10 carbon atoms containing a hydroxyl group in the 2- or 3-position and an unsubstituted hydrogen atom in the 1-position, or an acyl or ketal derivative of such a hydroxyaliphatic radical; a hydroxyaryl radical having up to 10 carbon atoms and a hydroxy group in the 2- or 3-position relative to the ester grouping; or a carboxyaliphatic radical of up to 10 carbon atoms containing a carboxyl group in the 1-, 2- or 3-position, or a C 1 -C 4 alkyl ester thereof or an alkali, alkaline earth metal, ammonium or substituted ammonium salt thereof. The use of p-menthane-3- carboxyamide and p-menthane-3-carboxylic acid with cigarette tobacco and filter tips respectively is exemplified.
