Abstract
1353247 Electromagnetic couplings STANDARD MAGNET AG 19 April 1971 [17 March 1970] 24415/71 Heading H2A [Also in Division F1] A pump embodying a dynamo-electric coupling to isolate the drive shaft 5 from the chamber through which the pump fluid is circulated comprises a driving member 7 of the coupling mounted on the shaft 5 and located radially inside a part-spherical non-magnetic boundary wall 8 of the chamber and a driven member 10 of the coupling carrying the impeller blades 13 and located radially outside the wall. The driving member 7 comprises a part-spherical shell formed of a number of segments of magnetic material permanently magnetized in the radial direction (Fig. 4, not shown) and the driven member 10 comprises a part-spherical magnetic ring carrying a squirrel cage with skewed bars (Fig. 3, not shown). The second member is supported from a disc 14 carried by a spherical ball 16 mounted between bearings 15, 15<SP>1</SP>. The pump may be the cooling water pump of a combustion engine, the drive shaft 5 being rotated by a pulley wheel 6. In a modification, (Fig. 5, not shown) the driving member (50), or a magnetic yoke thereof, is not mounted directly on the shaft 5 but is carried by a bellows (51) coupled via a capilliary tube with a fluid-containing tank (53), so that thermal expansion of the fluid will move the driving member closer to the boundary wall 8. This reduces the air gap between the two members, thus decreasing the slip and increasing the pumping rate when the cooling fluid being pumped gets too hot. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 1,287,145.
