Abstract
1353187 Web winding SUMITOMO ELECTRIC INDUSTRIES Ltd 7 May 1971 13827/71 Heading B8R A polytetrafluoroethylene tape winding apparatus in which snaking of the tape 4, Fig. 2, is prevented during winding on to a reel disposed in a recess 24 Fig. 1, of an indexable table 24 comprises a set of guide pins 10, 12 by means of which the major plane of the tape 4 is turned from the horizontal to the vertical plane in which it is guided, in transversely registered manner to the winding reel driven by a coupling element 34, by a set of guide rollers 13, 18, 22 whose axes are tiltable relative the plane of a support plate 11 by setting knobs 23. The apparatus also includes a pair of rotatable axles 2 for alternate supporting of tape supply reels 3 from which the tape 4 to be bound on to the reels disposed in the recesses 25 are drawn off past a tensioning device A and a set of fixed guide pins 6 to 9. The tensioning device includes a pair of interconnected levers b, h, of which lever b senses the tension and lever h controls the braking torque applied to the axle 2 by a bend brake k. A predetermined length of tape 4 measured by a metering roller 19 co-acting with a guide roller 14 is bound on to a reel driven by the coupling element 34 which is mounted on a vertically reciprocable carriage (not shown) and the tape 4 is severed by a pair of cutters 40 actuated in response of a signal delivered by one of a part of micro-switches 20, 21 when a radial projection on the metering roller 19 actuates the microswitch. Simultaneously a pair of grippers 39 arrests the leading edge of the cut tape to hold it in readiness for attachment to the reel core of a reel delivered from a magazine 28 at a position 29. The empty reel has its core coated with paste by a reciprocable applicator piston 31 and the empty reel is delivered in indexed steps to the winding position under the connecting element 34. Prior to commencement of winding the grippers 39 are displaced towards the reel core and the leading edge is attached to the core by a roller on a piston 44, whereupon the piston is retracted, the grippers are released and retracted and the connecting element lowered into contact with the reel to restart a new winding operation.
