1352921 Alumina catalyst carrier NALCO CHEMICAL CO 19 May 1971 15896/71 Heading C1A An alumina or silica-alumina catalyst carrier containing from 0-20% by weight silica is prepared in a continuous process in which a solution of an aluminate of an alkali metal (e.g. sodium aluminate) or ammonium, an acidic reagent (e.g. aluminium sulphate) and from 0-20% based on the dry weight of Al 2 O 3 produced of a silicate salt of an alkali metal (e.g. sodium silicate) or ammonium are reacted in an aqueous medium at a temperature within the range 70-135 C. and at a pH of from 5-12 while the concentration of alumina in the so formed slurry is maintained within the range 1-25% as Al 2 O 3 , the slurry is then filtered to increase the concentration of recovered solids to 10-20% by weight of Al 2 O 3 the precipitate dried at from 200-1,000 F. and the recovered precipitate in the form of a powder washed either before or after drying, wetted to form a slurry mix which is extruded to form pellets. An aldonate, e.g. gluconic acid may be added to the reaction mixture in an amount from 0À5-6% calculated as gluconic acid based on the dry weight of Al 2 O 3 . The extruded alumina bodies produced by this process may be used as catalyst carriers in fixed bed processes for hydrocracking, desulphurization and hydrogenation processes.
