Abstract

1352311 Yams EI DU FONT DE NEMOURS & CO 19 April 1971 [20 Jan 1970] 2795/70 Heading D1W A yarn suitable for the warp, weft, and stuffer threads, especially the weft, of woven pile fabrics, e.g. Axminster or Wilton carpets or furnishing fabrics such as cut or uncut moquettes, comprises a synthetic organic polymeric base yarn coated with a hot-melt synthetic resin adhesive composition which has a softening point substantially below that of the yarn and comprises (a) a copolymer of ethylene with a vinyl ester of a (C 1 -C 6 ) carboxylic acid or a copolymer of ethylene with a (C 1 -C 6 ) alkyl acrylate or methacrylate and (b) a wax. The base yarn, which is preferably multifilamentary or fibrillated to carry a large amount of the adhesive composition, may be a polyamide, polyester or, preferably, a polyolefin such as high density polyethylene or polypropylene, and is heated after being woven to bond the pile fibres to it. The latter may be wool, polyester, acrylic, polyamide, rayon, polypropylene, or wool/polyamide or wool/ rayon mixtures. Preferably the component of the adhesive composition that is copolymerised with ethylene is vinyl acetate, but other suitable components are vinyl formate, vinyl propionate, vinyl butyrate, ethyl acrylate, isobutyl acrylate and methyl methacrylate. To improve adhesion to the base yarn the adhesive composition may also include a further copolynierisable monomer such as acrylic, methacrylic or itaconic acid, acrylamide, #-dimethylamino-ethyl methacrylate, #-hydroxyethyl acrylate, diallyl maleate, diallyl phthalate, diallyl ether or ethylene glycol dimethacrylate. Preferred waxes for component (b) of the adhesive composition have a melting point of 49‹-104‹C and include Fisher-Tropsch waxes, hydrocarbon waxes such as paraffin wax, candelilla and carnauba waxes. A blend of high melting point petroleum wax and low molecular weight polyolefin wax may be used. Additionally, the adhesive composition may contain a minor proportion of other resin such as a highly stabilised ester resin, polyterpene resin, rosin &c, coumarone-indene resin, permanently fusible phenolic resin or petroleum hydrocarbon resin. The adhesive composition may also contain a slip agent such as a long chain aliphatic amide or N, N'-dioleylethylenediamene, a stabilizer or antioxydant such as a 2, 4, 6-trialkylated monohydroxy phenol, 4, 4'-thio-bis (6-tertiary butyl m-cresol), butylated hydroxy-toluene or butylated hydroxyanisole, a filler, e.g. barium sulphate, calcium carbonate, talc, clay or silica, pigments and plasticizers. The base yarn is coated by passing it through a heated bath of the adhesive composition from which it emerges through a metering die, the yarn being then cooled in a water bath.
