Abstract

1351773 Polyurethanes IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 26 June 1972 [16 July 1971] 33456/71 Heading C3R A solution of a polyurethane containing isocyanate-reactive groups is prepared by reacting together in a solvent inert to isocyanate groups a mixture of (a) 1 molar proportion of a substantially linear polyester, polyesteramide or polyether, (b) 1À15 to 8À0 molar proportions of 3 - isocyanatomethyl - 3,5,5 - trimethylcyclohexyl isocyanate and (c) simultaneously or subsequently an amount of a chain extender equivalent to 85 to 120% of the amount of diisocyanate in excess of that necessary for reaction with the polyester, polyesteramide or polyether until the solution has a viscosity of 1 to 1500 poises at 25‹ C., whereupon an excess of isocyanate-reactive organic compound is added. The preferred chain extenders are glycols. Suitably the isocyanate-reactive organic compound is polyfunctional and contains one group which is highly reactive towards isocyanate groups and the other group or groups which have lower reactivity. Examples of such compounds are aliphatic primary or secondary amines containing a hydroxyl group. The polyurethane solutions are suitable for use in the production of adhesives, lacquers, coatings and fibres. It is preferred in such production to add a curing agent to the polyurethane solutions. Preferred curing agents are organic polyisocyanates.
